Castell'Umberto: The city on the ridge of Rocca di Poggio Mountain

Castell'Umberto is an Italian municipality located on the northwestern ridge of Rocca di Poggio Mountain, between the rivers Naso and Fitalia, covering an area of 11.4 square kilometers at an altitude of 660 meters. The metropolitan city of Messina is approximately 90 kilometers away while Palermo is about 150 kilometers away. The ancient village of Castanìa, the old name of the city, was located further downstream and dominated the Fitalia stream.

History

The origins of the ancient village are uncertain, but according to Professor Rosario Scurria, the name Castanìa may be a corruption of "Castrum Aeneae", meaning the fortress of Aeneas. During the Byzantine era, the old village was a stronghold against Saracen invasions, and it was at that time that the ancient tower was built, which later became the castle of the noble Sollima family. In the 16th century, the Galletti family became the feudal lord of the barony of Castania, but the old village was abandoned due to the dangerous landslides that occurred between the 19th and 20th centuries. Thus, it was decided to build the new center, renamed in honor of the heir prince Umberto I.

Urban center and breathtaking views

Today, the town is one of the most welcoming and fortunate in the area for several reasons. The urban center was established according to the rules of the "garden city," characterized by a harmonious alternation between architecture and green spaces. The central square, where the mother church and town hall overlook, is the starting point for the new zone of the town and the communal park, which includes a swimming pool and sports fields. From the town, one can enjoy breathtaking views, especially from the hill of the church of Santa Croce. It offers a view of the Aeolian Islands and Mount Etna, the sacred Sicilian mountain. Less than a kilometer from the center, the historic center, the ancient village of Castanìa, can be reached, where one can admire the typical medieval urban fabric, surviving churches, and the castle tower.

Conclusion

Castell'Umberto is undoubtedly a fascinating and enjoyable tourist destination to visit. In addition to its historical aspects, the city offers its breathtaking views and the natural landscape of northern Sicily, characterized by the presence of the northern Nebrodi Mountains. The area is also famous for its cuisine and street food, representing a reason to make a stop in the city. Castell'Umberto is an ideal destination for those seeking a relaxed and welcoming environment, with the possibility of discovering historical places and experiencing unique food and wine experiences.
