Casteldaccia

Casteldaccia, the beautiful town on the Tyrrhenian coast

Hi everyone, today I'm taking you to discover Casteldaccia, a beautiful town on the Tyrrhenian coast of Sicily. With just over 11,000 inhabitants, it is only 18km from Palermo, the capital of the homonymous metropolitan city and the Sicilian Region.

History

Originally called ''Castel d'Accia'', Casteldaccia now has a central square called ''Piazza Matrice'' where the imposing Church of Maria Santissima Immacolata and the Castle of the Duke of Salaparuta stand, with medieval architectural style. In the town, there are also many narrow streets and typical Sicilian houses, which give it a picturesque atmosphere.

Casteldaccia was once the site of a 16th-century tower, called "Torre di Gallo", which was demolished in the mid-20th century. Along the coast, we also find the ''Villini'', private houses built in Liberty, Neo-Gothic and Eclectic style in the early 1900s. Moreover, it is known as the birthplace of the famous Corvo winery, as well as a renowned producer of Sicilian pastry and Buccellato.

Casteldaccia flood

The peaceful Casteldaccia was hit by a terrible flood on November 3, 2018. The incessant rain caused the Milicia river to overflow, resulting in the death of nine people, including a one-year-old girl, who resided in the villas of the Cavallaro area. It was a tragedy that hit the local community hard.

Monuments and places of interest

Visitors to Casteldaccia can admire the Church of San Giovanni Paolo II, whose modern architectural style was heavily influenced by the essential lines of Sicilian tradition. The church is highly appreciated by the locals and is a reference point for religious celebrations.

Society and infrastructure

Casteldaccia is well connected to the road network: it is crossed by the A19 motorway, the state road 113 and the provincial roads 61 and 88.

As for sports, football is one of the most practiced sports in the municipality, so much so that the A.S.D. Città di Casteldaccia football club was founded. The team has a long history, dating back to 1980, and participates in regional amateur leagues.

Administration

Casteldaccia is governed by the Mayor and a City Council elected by citizens. Below is a table of the administrations that have succeeded over time.
