Ciardes

Welcome to Castelbello-Ciardes, a welcoming municipality located in the beautiful Val Venosta just a few kilometers from the vibrant city of Merano. With its 2297 inhabitants, Castelbello-Ciardes is an ideal destination for those who want to immerse themselves in nature and discover the history of this fascinating region.

Physical geography

Castelbello-Ciardes is located at the foot of the Venosta Alps, immersed in a green and flourishing valley where the Adige River flows. In the municipal territory is located the protected area of the Alte Etsch - Colsano biotope, an important nature reserve that houses numerous species of flora and fauna of the area.

Name origins

The name Castelbello derives from the Latin Castellum Bellum, which means "beautiful castle", and refers to the ancient fortification that stood on this territory. Ciardes, instead, has pre-Latin origins and was first named "Sardis" in 1183.
