Castel Vittorio: history and beauty of the Ligurian Alps.

History

Castel Vittorio has an ancient and interesting history dating back to the 12th century when it was founded by the Lascaris of Ventimiglia. In 1260, Count Bonifacio decided to sell the property to the Genoese citizen Gianella Avvocato for 3,090 Genoese lire, and the latter then sold the property to Genoa in 1261. Renamed the fiefdom of Castelfranco, the Republic of Genoa incorporated this part of the Nervia territory under the jurisdictional control of the podesteria of Triora.

The fiefdom enjoyed wide administrative autonomy, electing local consuls and handling minor civil cases on its own. Throughout its history, Castel Vittorio had numerous conflicts with the neighboring town of Pigna, mainly due to the different political domains that administered the two villages. Castelfranco aligned with the Genoese and under its republican rule, the latter was incorporated into the possessions of the Duchy of Savoy.

Other popular movements and uprisings characterized this part of the Nervia valley territory during 1792, driven by the first revolutionary echoes coming from nearby France, with the subsequent passage in 1793 of the united municipalities of Pigna and Castelfranco in the canton of Perinaldo (Mentone district) in the Marittime Alps (department). In 1798, again separated from Pigna and within the territories of the Republic of Liguria, it became the cantonal capital in the jurisdiction of Palme with Sanremo as its capital.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Castel Vittorio is an Italian town that, despite its small size, is able to offer an authentic and unique experience. Its historic village is a true treasure to discover, with its elevated position, magnificent view and ancient history. If you are looking for a place to relax and enjoy the beauty of nature, Castel Vittorio is the place for you. I hope this summary has been helpful. Until next time!
