Castel del Giudice: A municipality rich in history and culture

With a population of approximately 307 inhabitants, the territory of the municipality was part of Abruzzo Citeriore until 1790, as indicated by the maps of the National Institute of Graphics and Giovanni Antonio Rizzi Zannoni.

History

The town was called "Castellum Iudicis" during the Norman period, then changed to "Castrum de Iudice". The toponym may derive from the noble family Iodice or refer to the local feudal lord who administered justice. In the twelfth century, the fief was owned by the Borrello family, and in 1267, Corrado di Antiochia became the owner.

From the fourteenth to the fifteenth century, the town was governed by various feudal lords, including Giovanni Antonio Caldora. During this period, there were no significant historical events, except for the birth of the condottieri Raimondo Caldora and his nephew Jacopo Caldora. In the twentieth century, the town experienced the phenomenon of emigration, with flows directed towards America and northern Europe.
