Castel Madama: a small town in the mountains of Lazio

Castel Madama is a small town located in the metropolitan city of Rome Capital in Lazio, with a population of about 7,099. It is situated at 428 meters above sea level, in a dominant position over the valley below where the Aniene river flows, on the northern foothills of the Prenestini mountains, where they border with the Tiburtini mountains. Our town is easily reachable from the Tiburtina Valeria road, in the stretch between Tivoli and Vicovaro. Our climate belongs to the E zone, 2104 GR/G.

A brief overview of the history and symbols of the city

The coat of arms of the Municipality of Castel Madama was recognized by decree of the head of Government on January 31st, 1929. The shield depicts the upper part of a tower on which the archangel Michael stands. The city has a deep and ancient history dating back to Roman times. It has often been the site of clashes and conflicts, but today it is a peaceful and tranquil place.

Places of interest in our town

If you come to visit us, you cannot miss our churches! Two are dedicated to very important saints in the Catholic tradition: the Church of San Michele Arcangelo and the Church of Sant'Anna. Additionally, there is also the Church of San Sebastiano and the Church of San Lorenzo. Among the military architectures, instead, there is the Orsini Castle.

Traditions and events that represent the heart of our community

One of the most important popular events in our town is the Palio Madama Margarita d'Austria, which takes place every year during the month of July. This historical event commemorates the entry of Margherita d'Austria into the fiefdom, which took her name, occurred way back in 1538. The Palio is celebrated with shows and processions along the streets and alleys of the four neighborhoods of Castel Madama: Borgo, Castelluccio, Empolitano, and Santa Maria della Vittoria.

Additionally, other traditional festivities and processions are held, in which the community actively participates, such as the Festival of San Michele Arcangelo, during the month of September, and the Good Friday Procession. A much-felt festival is also the one in honor of Sant'Antonio Abate and the suggestive Infiorata Madonna della Speranza.

But not only traditional events, culture, and gastronomy are also part of the everyday life of our town. The Sagra della Pera Spadona, during the month of July, Oliolive, which takes place in the fall during the period of olive harvesting and processing, and the Fair of San Michele Arcangelo, on May 8, are not to be missed.
