In this article, I will guide you to discover the geography, history, and traditions of this delightful country.

History

Castel di Sasso has among its citizens an important figure in Italian history: Decio Coletti. Born in the village in 1753, Coletti became a patriot known for his staunch fight for freedom. Today, it is possible to admire a monumental tribute in his memory, donated by citizens, inside the town hall.

The municipality of Castel di Sasso has undergone an evolution of its historic center. Originally, the capital was in the village of Sasso, but it was later moved to various inhabited centers of the municipality, including Prea, Strangolagalli, and San Marco.

During World War II, the territory of Castel di Sasso was crossed by American troops as part of the Italian Campaign. On October 14, 1943, an American battalion was repulsed by the Germans south of Cisterna, while another reached Prea at night. At dawn on October 17, the Americans commanded by General Lucian Truscott managed to enter the village of Villa Liberi, after facing harsh German resistance.

Symbols

The coat of arms and banner of the municipality of Castel di Sasso were granted by the President of the Republic's decree on January 7, 2010. The banner is a yellow flag bordered in blue.

Monuments and places of interest

The village of Castel di Sasso offers many interesting attractions to visit. One of the most notable places is located just outside the village: the frescoes of the semi-ruined chapel of the old cemetery, in Byzantine style, which could be an emanation of the frescoes of the nearby Abbey of Sant'Angelo in Formis in Sant'Angelo in Formis.

Within the municipality, there are two ancient villages: Sasso, dating back to the Middle Ages, where you can admire the ruins of the ancient fortress's walls and the church of San Biagio extra moenia, and Vallata, of late medieval style, partly in Catalan style.

Society

Demographic evolution

The village of Castel di Sasso has a population of 1046 inhabitants. The number of residents has decreased over the years, as has happened in many villages in southern Italy.

Traditions and folklore

Castel di Sasso has many traditions that are still passed down from generation to generation. The most felt festival is that of the patron saint Biagio, which is celebrated every February 3. The villagers gather to honor their patron saint and participate in rituals such as the preparation of the famous San Biagio biscuits and the anointing of the throat, interceding with the Saint against sore throat and any other illness.
