Castel d'Azzano: history, art, and Venetian cuisine.

History

Castel d'Azzano has an ancient and fascinating history dating back to prehistoric times. Archaeological excavations conducted around the ''Villa Violini Nogarola'' have brought to light numerous Roman era artifacts, demonstrating that the area was already inhabited during that period. The name of the town, on the other hand, seems to derive from the Latin name ''Attius,'' very common in Roman times, while the term "Castle" refers to the building still present in the center of the town, which has marked the history and life of the town.

The Castel d'Azzano area was long covered by a resurgence lake, Lake Vacaldo, which had fundamental economic and strategic importance for the surrounding area. The lake was used as a water reserve for the surrounding countryside and as a fish reserve, albeit for a limited number of people. Throughout history, the lake also came into play in military contexts, during a camp of Frederick Barbarossa's army in 1164.

With World War I, the lake underwent important renovations, but after the war it was gradually abandoned and drained, leaving room for the fertile countryside of the town.
