Castel Castagna

Welcome to Castel Castagna: a small yet charming community in Abruzzo

Hello everyone! Today, I will be talking about a lesser-known but very interesting place: Castel Castagna, a commune of only 426 inhabitants in the province of Teramo, in Abruzzo. Castel Castagna is part of the "Comunità Montana Gran Sasso" mountain community and enjoys a dominant position over the valley of the Mavone River. But, let's dive into its history...

History

Castel Castagna boasts a very ancient history, linked to the nearby city of Bisenti and the two valleys that surround it: Valle Siciliana and the Fino River Valley. In the Middle Ages, Castel Castagna was an important center of civil and criminal jurisdiction, as evidenced by archaeological finds and the numerous towers and castles that still dominate the landscape today.

Castel Castagna: history and beauties of an Abruzzese municipality.

Antiquity

During the Middle Ages, Castel Castagna was one of the strategic communication hubs between the Kingdom of Naples and the Duchy of Spoleto. Its castle, now almost completely destroyed, was one of the most imposing fortresses in the area and housed an armed garrison to protect the territory.

Notes

If you visit Castel Castagna, don't miss the opportunity to visit the Church of Santa Maria di Ronzano, dating back to the 18th century and characterized by a beautiful Baroque-style altar. Moreover, the Penne District and the Bisenti Mandate are worth a visit, two areas rich in history and natural beauty.
