Castel Campagnano
Castel Campagnano: History and Symbols
Hello everyone! Today I will talk to you about the municipality of Castel Campagnano, a small Campanian town with a rich history of events.
History
Castel Campagnano, known in dialect as ''Campànnànë'', is located in the province of Caserta and has just under 1500 inhabitants. Its history dates back to the Roman era, as demonstrated by the findings in the Squille district. In the Middle Ages, it was mentioned as ''castrum Campanianum'' and in 1383 was the scene of the battle between Charles III of Naples and Louis I of Angiò.
Since 1862, the town changed its name to ''Castello di Campagnano'', before assuming its current name in 1916. During World War II, the town was liberated by American troops in 1943.
Symbols
The symbol of the municipality consists of an azure shield, where a camp tent with a cross atop is depicted. The banner is instead made up of a white and azure divided fabric.
Monuments and Places of Interest
Castel Campagnano is a small town rich in history, where architectural beauties are not lacking.
Religious architecture
In the center of the town is the Church of Santa Maria ad Nives, where several valuable frescoes are preserved. A little further away stands the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, known for its obelisk-shaped bell tower.
Civil architecture
The centerpiece of the historic center is the Ducal Castle. A medieval fortress, whose construction dates back to the 10th century, probably by the Lombards, was the home of the noble Carafa d'Aragona family. It is currently open to the public as a museum, where antique furniture and valuable paintings can be admired inside.
Society
The population of Castel Campagnano has always been rather stable, oscillating between 1000 and 1500 inhabitants. Over the years, the town has experienced moments of growth and development, without however losing its identity as a small historic center of the province of Caserta.
Demographic evolution
The latest ISTAT data from last year show that the population has slightly increased compared to the previous year, reaching 1490 inhabitants.
