Discover Casteggio's Geography

Casteggio extends over a vast area that includes parts of both flat and hilly terrain. We are crossed by the former state road 10, the Alessandria-Piacenza railway and the A21 motorway, which connects us to Turin, Piacenza and Brescia. The oldest part of the city is located on a hill called Pistornile, while the modern center extends into the plain. New neighborhoods are located near some valleys. Our municipal territory is affected by the course of the Coppa stream and the Rile stream, which flows in the hilly area.

The History of Casteggio

The origins of Casteggio date back to the ancient city of Clastidium, founded by the Ligurian people known as the Marici. In the 6th century BC, the city prospered as an important village in the area and was fortified as an oppidum. In 223 BC, the Romans came into contact with the Marici, and soon after in 222 BC, the Insubri attacked the city but were defeated by the Romans.
