Castana

Everything you need to know about Castana, Lombardy

Hello friends! Today I will talk about Castana, a municipality with 709 inhabitants in the province of Pavia, Lombardy.

History

Castana was first mentioned in 974, along with its castle, in a property exchange of the Monastery of San Pietro in Ciel d'Oro located outside the castle and in the bottom of Castana. However, the place did not have great importance, not being mentioned in the diploma of 1164 with which Frederick Barbarossa emphasized the jurisdiction of Pavia over the territory (the diploma instead mentions the nearby Montescano).

In 1250, Castana appears in the list of Pavia lands. It was part of the feud of Broni, belonging to the Beccaria until 1531 when Castana (with the Martinasca fraction, which was then a separate municipality) was part of the lands comprising about half of the Broni feud, which were confiscated from the Beccaria and assigned to the "Visconti Scaramuzza". Later (1531) it passed to the Borromeo, and from them in 1740 to the Pallavicino. These feudal lords were also the major landowners in the municipality. Feudalism in Castana probably ended a little before its definitive abolition in 1797.

In the XVIII century, Martinasca, an autonomous municipality, was then aggregated to Castana, whose municipality was called for some time ''Castana con Martinasca''.

The coat of arms and the flag of the Municipality were granted by decree of the President of the Republic on April 18, 2006. The flag is a yellow banner with a blue border.

Monuments and places of interest

The Castello di Castana is privately owned, but it was completely renovated and restored between 2004 and 2006. I must disappoint you, dear friends, it can’t be visited.
