In reality, it seems to be linked to the figure of the Archangel Michael, highly revered by the Lombards and also present in the municipal coat of arms.
The settlement dates back to the 11th century and was included among the possessions of the ancient Monastery of Santa Cristina. From the 12th century, the village became the head of the district thanks to its prominent position. In 1452, the village was enfeoffed to Matteo Bolognini, who enlarged the powerful fortress already present as the seat of his county.

In the 18th century, the village had 3000 inhabitants and the fiscal situation was normalized. However, it remained under the institutional influence of the Bolognini and was divided into three parts for taxation: the Bologni, the Marchesa Talenti-Fiorenza and the so-called "commune of the poor". In 1786, when Emperor Joseph II of Habsburg-Lorraine instituted the provinces of the State of Milan, Sant'Angelo Lodigiano was included in that of Lodi and all its administrative customs were standardized to those of Lodi.
