Cassina Rizzardi: an Italian municipality with an original name
Cassina Rizzardi is an Italian municipality located in Lombardy. The name of the municipality comes from the word "cascina," a Lombard expression that indicates a house with an open courtyard on one side, while "Rizzardi" refers to the noble Comasco family who received the land around the farmhouse on concession.
The geography of Cassina Rizzardi
The territory of Cassina Rizzardi is crossed by the Livescia stream, which marks a stretch of the municipal border. Crossing the border, the Livescia ends its course in the Lura stream, of which the Lura Park is a part, as well as the territory of Cassina Rizzardi.
History seen from Cassina Rizzardi
Compared to other localities in the Fino Mornasco area, Cassina Rizzardi did not constitute a real village in the Middle Ages. However, the lands of Cassina were highly coveted thanks to their fertility and beauty. They were controlled by ecclesiastical entities in the medieval period, and the nobles owned them after the Teresian Cadastre.
The Rizzardi family obtained the territory on concession through a document dated 1322, and subsequently, the fief passed to the Lucini and then to the Porro Lambertenghi. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the land of "Cassina Rizzardi" or "Cassina Rizarda" was included in the parish of Fino, within the Duchy of Milan.
During this period, the territory of the municipality of Cassina Rizzardi included the "cassinaggi" of Molino and Molinello, as well as the territory of the already suppressed municipalities of Boffalora, Monticello, and Ronco. In 1805-1814, with the administrative reorganization of the Kingdom of Italy, the municipality of Cassina Rizzardi was first annexed to Cadorago and then moved to the municipal territory of Fino Mornasco in 1812.
However, after the end of the Napoleonic era, Cassina Rizzardi was reconstituted as an autonomous municipal entity. Over the centuries, the two-bladed mills used for the functioning of the streams were very useful.
Agriculture and breeding in Cassina Rizzardi
In addition to vine and mulberry plantations, the fertility of the land allowed for crop rotation of oats, rye, wheat, and corn, as well as the development of livestock activities.
The role of Cassina Rizzardi in the unity of Italy
In 1860, the Porro Lambertenghi family, owners of our municipality, played a fundamental role in the marriage of Giuseppe Garibaldi in Fino Mornasco, who arrived in the area with his Garibaldino in May 1859. During the wedding lunch, the groom left his bride without saying goodbye.
