Caspoggio
Welcome to Caspoggio!
Hi everyone! Today I want to talk to you about Caspoggio, a small municipality of about 1338 inhabitants located in the province of Sondrio, in upper Lombardy, surrounded by the beautiful mountains of the central Alps. Caspoggio is an ideal place for all those who love nature, trekking, skiing, and tranquility.
History
Caspoggio has a long history dating back to the 14th century when the powerful Lords of Sondrio built the largest Castrum in Valmalenco. The village, which probably originated as a village of this castle, was an important crossroads for communications and the transit of troops and supplies between Northern domains, Lombardy, and the South. Caspoggio was always a border town, and a very ancient part of the town is the characteristic "Truna," a complex with incorporated barns and closed to the outside. Today, the Truna constitutes the typical historic center of Caspoggio.

The Via Cavallera
Valmalenco was crossed by an ancient and impervious road called the Via Cavallera, which offered a remarkable shortcut for traffic between North and South Europe. Caspoggio was built on this last stretch and became an important point of passage for commercial and local traffic, but also for the dreaded mercenary horde of the Lanzichenecchi, which caused the outbreak of the plague in the famous Manzoni's work, I Promessi Sposi.
Life in Caspoggio
The Caspoggini were mainly dedicated to woodcutting and pastoralism. The inhabitants of the area went down to the plain with the bricolle loaded to sell butter and cheese made from their animals' milk, wool, and skins. The Caspoggini also brought medicinal herbs collected in the mountains, such as Deneda and Genepì. It is said that "Magnani" (the craftsman who worked the ollare stone) was very present in the past. Even the women of Caspoggio were very active. In fact, they were dedicated to spinning wool and weaving local traditional clothing.
Holidays in Caspoggio
Today, Caspoggio is an excellent place for mountain holidays. The peaks of Monte Disgrazia, Pizzo Scalino, and Pizzo Bernina crown the village and offer a breathtaking view. Ski lovers will find slopes for all levels, while trekking enthusiasts can take excursions at all levels of difficulty.
The Cimone park
For adventure lovers, Caspoggio is home to the Cimone park. This amusement park is a unique experience. Starting from the high altitude with the cable car, visitors can descend along an adventurous and fun path. The various routes are suitable for all ages and different skill levels.
The local cuisine
The local cuisine is another reason to visit Caspoggio. You can enjoy typical dishes of Valtellinese cuisine, and Polenta taragna, made with the famous Bitto cheese, is a specialty of the area. In addition, red Valtellinese wine is an excellent choice to accompany the typical local dishes.
Conclusions
In conclusion, Caspoggio is a small municipality with a great history and rich in nature and scenic beauties. It is also an ideal place for mountain holidays, where you can do sports, relax, taste the good local cuisine, and have fun. I can't wait to visit this paradisiacal place again!
