Casorate Primo

Welcome to Casorate Primo!

Hello friends, today I will talk about Casorate Primo, a delightful municipality in the province of Pavia, Lombardy. With a population of 8,763 inhabitants, Casorate Primo is located in the northern Pavese, near the left bank of the Ticino river and on the border with the city of Milan. In this article, we will talk about the history, symbols and monuments of this beautiful city.

The history of Casorate Primo

The lordship of Casorate was donated by Emperor Lotario I to the Bishop of Pavia in 849. In 1164, Emperor Federico Barbarossa placed Casorate under the dominion of the city of Pavia, which assumed its administration. Despite its proximity to Milan, Casorate was always administratively linked to Pavia, being part of the "Campagna Soprana". In the eighteenth century, feudal dependence on the Bishop of Pavia still persisted, who granted Casorate the municipal Statutes in 1418. In 1239, the Lombard Confederates defeated Emperor Federico II of Swabia there. On November 12, 1356, Lodrisio Visconti, commanding Milanese troops, defeated the imperial forces led by Marquardo di Randeck. In 1863 it was renamed Casorate Primo.

Prepositural Church of San Vittore

The Prepositural Church of San Vittore in Casorate, also known as the cathedral, is the main church of the city. Although Casorate is in the province of Pavia, the church belongs to the Parishes of the Archdiocese of Milan, Decanate of Abbiategrasso, Archdiocese of Milan. With the titles of Parish, Prepositural and formerly Collegiate seat of Provost, it was the ancient capopieve church of Casorate, which included, in addition to the other three churches of Casorate (Sant'Antonio, Santa Maria and dei Santi Gervasio and Protaso, this one no longer exists), also the oratory of Merlate, the churches of Vernate, Moncucco, Pasturago and the parishes of Calvignasco, Bubbiano, Motta Visconti and Besate. It was also the seat of a vicariate. It is said that this church was the oldest in the area (it already existed in the 5th/6th century) and that it was rebuilt in its current form in the second half of the eighteenth century, completed in 1790 by the architect Gallori. Thanks to this reconstruction, the church now has a total length of 50 meters. The interior was originally a Greek cross, but now it is a Latin cross, and features four side chapels, two frescoed domes, and two chapels on either side of the main altar. The exterior is characterized by neoclassical style facade. Behind the church, the bell tower was built in 1803 and completed in 1838 with the installation of the bells.
