Welcome to the Province of Reggio Calabria!
Hello everyone! Today we’ll be talking about the Province of Reggio Calabria, a beautiful area of Calabria that unfortunately no longer exists as an administrative entity since 2017, when it was replaced by the Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria. But no matter! We can’t wait to introduce you to this fantastic Italian region, which faced west onto the Tyrrhenian Sea, and south and east onto the Ionian Sea.
Physical Geography
Territory
The Province of Reggio Calabria was very large, covering the ‘toe’ of the Italian peninsula. Its surface was mostly mountainous, with the presence of Aspromonte, the massif that occupied the entire provincial territory. Only one plain was located in the south, called “a chjàna”, the plain of Gioia, near the Tyrrhenian Sea. This area, which occupied 21.1% of the territory of Calabria, was made up of 97 municipalities and accounted for about a quarter of the population of the region.
Districts
Between 1998 and 2010, the province was divided into three districts:
- The Strait District (or Reggio District), which included Greater Reggio, the Costa Viola and the Hellenic Area of Amendolea and Bovesia;
- The Palmi District, which was part of the Metropolitan Area of Reggio Calabria and coincided with the Plain of Gioia Tauro;
- The Locri District, whose territory extended from the Ionian area, from Reggio to Monasterace, to the border with the Province of Catanzaro.
Municipalities
The Province of Reggio Calabria was made up of 97 municipalities, each with its own particularity. Among these are: Africo, Ardore, Bagnara Calabra, Bianco, Bova Marina, Bovalino, Brancaleone, Calanna, Campo Calabro, Cardeto, Casignana, Caulonia, Ciminà, Cittanova, Cosoleto, Delianuova and many others!
History
The Province of Reggio Calabria had a very important history, in fact it corresponded to the territories of the ancient Province of Calabria Ulteriore Prima, established in 1817 by the division of Calabria Ulteriore into Ulteriore I and Ulteriore II. Unfortunately, in 2017 the province was abolished and replaced by the Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria.
Conclusions
Despite the fact that the Province of Reggio Calabria no longer exists as an administrative entity, its culture and history still live on. With its splendid landscapes, its unique food and wine and its picturesque municipalities, the Province of Reggio Calabria is definitely worth a visit. Come and explore this part of Italy and we assure you that you won't be disappointed!
