Caselle Torinese is a municipality with a population of 14,009 located west of the Stura di Lanzo river and about 22 km north of Turin. History#

Caselle Torinese was founded during the ancient Roman era and was called "Casellum" since it was the location for toll collection on the road leading to the Lanzo valleys. Over the centuries, Caselle has undergone various changes, and its history has been marked by significant events such as the 1974 air disaster.

1974 Air Disaster#

On January 1, 1974, an Itavia flight crashed on a farm under construction a few dozen meters from the perimeter area of the Torino-Caselle Airport terminal. Of the total 38 passengers and 4 crew members on board, 35 passengers and 3 crew members died in the disaster.

Symbols##

The coat of arms of Caselle Torinese consists of four houses on a red background with a white cross, representing the four families that survived the plague that hit the area in the Middle Ages. The gonfalon is a white drapery.

Monuments and Places of Interest#

Caselle Torinese has two parish churches: the Church of San Giovanni Evangelista, the oldest, which houses the highly venerated statue of the Madonna Addolorata, carried in a procession during the September patronal feast, and the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, more recent. Among the historical and cultural buildings of interest are Palazzo Mosca, the Church of Battuti (an example of Piedmontese Baroque), and the Church of Madonnina.

Society#

In the last sixty years, the resident population in Caselle Torinese has doubled. According to data from the Italian National Institute of Statistics as of December 31, 2017, there were 885 foreign citizens residing in Caselle Torinese, with the majority coming from Romania.

Infrastructure and Transportation#

Caselle Torinese is home to the Torino-Caselle Airport, inaugurated in 1953, which is managed by the Società Azionaria Gestione Aeroporto Torino. The town also has a railway station on the Torino-Ceres Railway.

Administration#

The mayor of Caselle Torinese is Matilde Giudice, and the Palazzo Mosca is the seat of the town council. The municipality has a twinning with the French town of Culoz.

Sports#

U.S.D Caselle Calcio, founded in 1908, is the city's main football team and plays in the Piemonte-Valle d'Aosta Promotion League.
