Discovering the Genoa-Casella Railway

Friends, today I'm taking you on a journey to discover the Genoa-Casella Railway, a narrow-gauge railway that connects the heart of the city of Genoa with the beautiful valley of Alta Scrivia. It's a truly enchanting journey, completely crossing the Ligurian Apennines, covering a total distance of 24 kilometers in the mountains.

History

The history of this railway is very interesting. Its origins date back to the end of the 19th century when a direct railway connection, the SAFEL (Ligurian Electric Railways Limited Company), was planned between Genoa and Emilia-Romagna. The SAFEL envisioned a local passenger line that would connect the city center to all the small towns and vacation spots in the Ligurian hinterland, which were otherwise not served by any rapid transportation system. The first trunk of this extensive network was precisely the Genoa-Casella.

Construction of the railway began in 1915 and was completed in 1929, when it was opened for operation. The line was designed from the start to be a continuous electric-powered line to ensure passenger comfort. Additionally, the railway gauge was chosen to reduce infrastructure costs and comply with the regulations of the Higher Council of Public Works.

Over the years, the railway has undergone several transformations and improvements, to reach its current management by AMT (Genoa), operating both as a railway company and as an infrastructure manager.

The journey starts from Piazza Manin station in the center of Genoa and continues through the historic districts of the city, until it reaches the San Gottardo station, where the ascent to the Apennines begins. From here, the train passes through a landscape of woods and fields, following the Ligurian mountains. It passes through the towns of Campi, Ponte Decimo, Sant'Olcese, and Bargagli before arriving at Casella, the terminal station of the line.
