Territory
Turin is located in the Po Valley, between the Stura di Lanzo, Sangone, and Po rivers. The city is surrounded by some alpine valleys, such as the Val di Susa, which connects Turin with France through the Fréjus tunnels. History of Turin
Turin is a city with deep roots in history. It was founded around the 3rd century BC by the Taurini, a Gallic people who called it "Taurasia". Later, it was transformed into a Roman colony by Augustus and renamed "Iulia Augusta Taurinorum". After the Ostrogoth domination, it became the capital of the important Duchy of Turin, and later passed under the lordship of the House of Savoy. In 1563, it became the capital of the eponymous duchy. In 1720, it became the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia and later of the Kingdom of Italy from 1861 to 1946. Turin has also been the site of important events such as the 1911 International Exposition and the XX Winter Olympic Games in 2006.
Economy of Turin
Turin is the country's third biggest economy-production industry complex, along with Milan and Genoa. It is the hub of the Italian automotive industry and has important centers for publishing, banking and insurance, information technology, film, food and beverage, space (astronomy), industrial design, sports, fashion, and artificial intelligence. Turin is famous as the home of some of the world's greatest symbols of "Made in Italy", including vermouth, Gianduiotti, breadsticks, and espresso coffee.
Culture and heritage of Turin
Turin is also one of Italy's major university, artistic, tourist, scientific and cultural centers. Its territory includes areas and buildings protected by UNESCO, such as the palaces and the areas of the Sabaude residences in Piedmont (world heritage) and the Po Hills area (biosphere reserve). In 2022, Turin hosted the Eurovision Song Contest. The city also has a long tradition in the field of art, with the presence of important museums and galleries, such as the Albertina Academy of Fine Arts, the Egyptian Museum, the Sabauda Gallery, and the National Museum of Cinema.
