Physical geography
Casazza, or Casàssa in the Bergamo dialect, is located on the right bank of the Cherio river, about 24 kilometers east of Bergamo. The surrounding territory is hilly and offers expansive views of the surrounding valleys.
Territory
The Val Cavallina, where Casazza is located, offers numerous nature trails. Starting from the town center, you can walk the path to reach the Suardi Tower of Mologno, one of the most important medieval constructions in the area.
History
The history of Casazza goes back to the Roman era, as evidenced by the discovery of burial sites from that period. A Roman village, called Cavellas, was located in that area and gives its name to the entire Val Cavallina.
Documents dating back to the 9th century attest to the existence of the parish of Mologno, under whose jurisdiction the northern part of the Val Cavallina was located. The Church of San Lorenzo, still present in the village, was the parish church and dedicated to Saint Lawrence.
The village of Mologno, located on a hill, began to develop as a settlement nucleus around the castle of the Suardi family. The village of Colognola, on the opposite bank, also presents important medieval remains, including a tower with an attached residential building.
In 1927, after the unification of the municipalities of Mologno and Molini di Colognola, the municipality of Casazza was born. The parish church dedicated to San Lorenzo was built in 1769 and still features paintings by local artists.
Symbols of Casazza
The coat of arms and flag of the municipality of Casazza were granted by presidential decree on March 27, 1974. The coat of arms features a stylized image of the church of San Lorenzo, while the flag is white with a vertical green stripe.
