Casavatore

The Municipality of Casavatore

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk about Casavatore, a municipality in the metropolitan city of Naples in Campania. The town has 18,014 inhabitants and is particularly unique because it is the Italian municipality with the highest population, housing and urban density.

History

The territory of Casavatore has been inhabited since Roman times and was part of the territory of the ancient city of Atella. During those times, the territory was divided into centuries by the Gracchi and later also in the Augustan era. Recently, private citizens and law enforcement have found Roman tombs and objects.

During the Middle Ages, the farming center of Casavatore took on its own name and identity. In 1308, the name "Casavatore" was explicitly mentioned. Other references date back to 1190 and 1298 giving rise to a philologically correct hypothesis on the etymology of the name Casavatore.

In 1678, some farms in the Naples countryside, including Casavatore, were put up for sale. The locals paid a ransom of 2,000 ducats to avoid being feudalized. In 1699, the inhabitants of Casavatore commissioned Giacomo Colombo to create a wooden statue dedicated to their patron saint. During the Napoleonic period and the reign of Gioacchino Murat, Casavatore was merged with the municipality of Casoria and became a hamlet until the end of World War II. Subsequently, the municipality received autonomy.

Casavatore: the most densely populated municipality in Italy.

The present

In the 1950s, the municipality was predominantly agrarian, but over time and thanks to the Italian economic miracle, it became part of the famous industrial triangle of northern Naples along with the municipalities of Arzano and Casoria. This led to the urbanization of the territory, including the district of Acacie, now joined to the Neapolitan district of Secondigliano.

Curiosities

Did you know that in Casavatore one of the main festivities is the feast of Saint John the Baptist? Every year on June 24, the day of the birth of Saint John the Baptist, it is celebrated.

Conclusions

In summary, Casavatore is a municipality with an ancient and interesting history and a unique geographical position. From the town, you can easily reach the sea of Naples, the Cilento coast, and the Amalfi coast. In addition, the proximity to Naples makes Casavatore an ideal place to taste the delicacies of Neapolitan cuisine. Do not miss the chance to visit it!
