History: the origins of Casarano

The origins of Casarano date back to ancient times and are still a subject of debate among scholars. According to legend, the city was founded in Roman times and named after the centurion Caesar, but there is also archaeological evidence of the passage of the Trajan's Road, which skirts the city's territory.

During the Byzantine period, Casarano became a place of culture and exchange between East and West. The coexistence of Greek and Latin rites continued until the sixteenth century. However, the barbarian invasions represented a severe blow to the city, which was destroyed by the Saracens in 842. Following this event, a new settlement was founded and called "Caesaranum magnum," which is today's Casarano.
