History

The municipality of Casalvieri has an ancient history, dating back to the Middle Paleolithic period. In 1017 the toponym of the town was mentioned and in 1046 there was already a castle that in 1076 passed to the property of the Montecassino Abbey together with two nearby convents. Over the centuries, Casalvieri passed under different properties and between 1583 and 1796 it was a fief of the Boncompagni family. During the French occupation there were episodes of brigandage and during World War II it suffered German occupation and bombings. During the 19th century the town had an important demographic growth, but subsequently the demographic decline was caused by emigration between the 1930s and 1960s.

The municipality of Casalvieri boasts some religious architecture of great beauty. The Mother Church of Saints Giovanni Battista and Evangelista, built in the 18th century, has a baroque architectural facade with statues of the titular saints. Inside, there are 18th century paintings and statues of virtues. Furthermore, since 1747 the church has housed the body of the martyr Saint Onorio, patron saint of the town, preserved in a golden wooden urn.

The Sanctuary of Santa Maria delle Rose, declared a national monument, is located in the Roselli district, on a hill of the same name.
