The territory of Casalnuovo di Napoli has an elliptical shape and extends southward to the border with Volla, Sant'Anastasia, and Pollena Trocchia. The northwest part is the most urbanized, while the eastern part is almost entirely dedicated to agriculture. Licignano occupies the eastern countryside and divides the territory into two major zones, while Tavernanova is located to the south, on the border with Pomigliano d'Arco and Arpino (Casoria), a fraction of Casoria. The territory was previously marshy, but thanks to the Bourbon hydraulic reclamation and the construction of the so-called "Regi Lagni," the area has become much more habitable. In some areas of Casalnuovo, it reaches up to thirteen meters below sea level.
The territory of the municipality of Casalnuovo di Napoli is composed of four villages. The largest of these villages is the fraction of Licignano, but Tavernanova and Casarea are also very popular fractions. All four locations make up a single conurbation, but Tavernanova and Casarea are identifiable as separate inhabited centers, unlike Licignano, which has become essentially a large residential neighborhood, although it features the only historic part of the municipality.

Casalnuovo di Napoli has a rather rich history. The settlement was built on the ruins of "Archora," one of the villages from which Afragola had originated. In the early fifteenth century, the city became a barony acquired by Giovanni (III) de Alexandro, of the Casato d'Alessandro resident in Terra di Lavoro and Naples. De Alexandro has been cited as the Grand Chamberlain of Calabria (1415), Marshal of the Kingdom, Justice of the Scholars, and adviser to Queen Joanna II of Naples.
