Casalmoro: ancient history and important archaeological discoveries

History of Casalmoro

Casalmoro is a municipality in the Asolo district, bordering the province of Brescia. Despite the current development of industrial activities, it has maintained the typical urban layout of rural Padanian villages. The landscape is characterized by numerous natural and artificial waterways. To the west flows the Chiese river, particularly clear thanks to the springs, while to the east is the Fossa Magna, a canal dating back to the Visconti era that marked the border between the territories belonging to the Duchy of Milan and the Republic of Venice. The Seriosa de Molino, another canal, crosses the town before flowing into the Chiese. The surrounding countryside has some farms, but there are no real hamlets. In the center, public buildings, from the Town Hall to the Kindergarten and Primary Schools, including the Sports Hall, are of recent construction. The main road connections are represented by the 343 Asolana Brescia/Parma State Road and the Remedello Station, about 2 km away.

Archaeology and important discoveries in Casalmoro

Through the archaeological excavations of Vezzole, which took place in the first half of the 1980s, evidence of the Neolithic culture and the subsequent Bronze Age in the Casalmoro area was recovered. In particular, two tombs were found, one of which contained the skeletal remains of an individual buried in a crouched position with the skull drilled. The incision in the head was made transversely, avoiding injuries to the brain, demonstrating the advanced level of prehistoric civilization developed along the Chiese river. In addition, ceramics, horn and bone tools, faunal remains, fragments of meals, and bronze artifacts such as pins and brooches were found. Some tombs with Gallic decorations, dating back to around 200-300 BC, are just some of the important archaeological discoveries in Casalmoro.

Conclusions

In conclusion, Casalmoro is a commune steeped in the ancient history of Lombardy, which presents itself as a quiet place, where agriculture is king. Its inhabitants, just over two thousand, live in a small town where public buildings are of recent construction and which is a bit far from the nearest train station. However, thanks to its geographical location and important archaeological finds, Casalmoro represents a place of interest for those who want to learn about the history and culture of ancient Lombardy.
