Casalmaiocco
Hello, let me introduce you to Casalmaiocco!
Welcome to Casalmaiocco, a municipality in the province of Lodi with a long and fascinating history. In this text, I will take you on a journey to discover the most important moments of its history, its monuments, and the places of interest in the municipality. Let's begin!
The history of Casalmaiocco
The first mention of Casalmaiocco dates back to 1210 when the Bishop of Lodi recorded the payment of a fief by the Alamaniis family. The municipality takes its name from the "casale" of the Maiocchi family, who acquired the domain of the fief in 1417. In 1515, the municipality was the scene of the Battle of Marignano, one of the most important battles of the Italian Renaissance. It is said that during the battle, King Francis I of France stayed in Casalmaiocco.
During the following centuries, the fief changed ownership several times, the last of which was the Biglia family until 1782. Until 1723, the municipalities of Casalmaiocco, Cologno, and Cascina Buttintrocca were autonomous and independent, but from 1757 Casalmaiocco was annexed to Cologno. After the unification of Italy, the municipality of ''Cologno ed Uniti'' took on the new name of ''Casalmaiocco''.
Symbols of the municipality
The coat of arms of the municipality of Casalmaiocco was granted in 1993. It depicts a house, which symbolizes the "casale" of the Maiocchi family, who gave their name to the municipality.
Monuments and places of interest
One of the most important churches to visit in Casalmaiocco is the Church of San Martino Vescovo. Built in the 18th century and then renovated, the church is a testimony to the history of the municipality. Additionally, it is possible to visit the ancient 17th century palace of the Marquises Brivio Signori di Casalmaiocco and the ancient residence of the nobles Sempreri - Del Poggio, also from the 17th century.
The municipality is crossed by the Cavo Marocco, an artificial canal built between 1805 and 1817 to provide water to the rice fields in the Province of Pavia. The canal originates from the springs in Cascina Gardino di Rossate, a fraction of Comazzo, and crosses the Lodi and Pavia territories before flowing directly into the Po River.
