Casalfiumanese: history, nature and gastronomy in Romagna.

The history of Casalfiumanese

The history of Casalfiumanese dates back to the High Middle Ages, when there was a cluster of houses along the Salato stream called "Rivo Salso". In the 10th and 11th centuries, the inhabitants decided to build a walled fortress called "castrum" on a nearby hill, naming it "Castrum Casale". Later, the city became a free commune. In the 13th century, the castle of Casale was part of the county of the city of Imola, but in the following century it passed to the Bolognese. Over the years, Casalfiumanese was contested between Bologna and Imola, but eventually came under the jurisdiction of Bologna. Later, in the territory of the six "castra", two new centers arose: the inhabited area of the parish of Sant'Andrea and that of Pedriaga, located a few kilometers from each other. In 1417, all these communities joined to form the Podestaria of the Municipality of Bologna in the Imola area.
