Casaletto Vaprio: history and nature in rural Lombardy.

Origins of the name: Vaprio and Casaletto

The town of Casaletto Vaprio has an ancient history, dating back to the 7th century AD, but its name is not easy to interpret. Until 1102, the term "Vaprio" referred to the Foraneo Vicariate of Trescore Cremasco, and then it was associated only with the locality of Casaletto. From a document dating back to 1178, we know that the town was called only "Vaprio" and the name "Casaletto" was added to distinguish it from the homonymous town of Casaletto Ceredano, only at the end of the fifteenth century.

History: the Church of San Giorgio Martire and the case of the Benvenuti family

The Church of San Giorgio Martire in Casaletto Vaprio was built in the early centuries of the Christian era and has undergone numerous transformations over the centuries. In the past, another church dedicated to San Michele Arcangelo stood near the settlement but was demolished in 1550. The town of Casaletto Vaprio also had a tragic episode in its history: in 1681, Giovanni Battista Benvenuti, at the age of twenty-three, killed the Parish Rector of Casaletto, Sac. Giuseppe Crotti, to avenge an alleged offense suffered by his mother. The young Benvenuti died at the age of thirty-six fighting against the Turks, but the Parish Priests of Casaletto obtained the honorary title of Archpriests to repair the offense done to the parish.

Casaletto Vaprio is a small town immersed in the Cremonese countryside, rich in history, and culture. Its Church of San Giorgio Martire and the story of the Benvenuti family are just some of the episodes that have marked its millennial history. If you are looking for a peaceful and relaxing place, Casaletto Vaprio is the right place for you!
