History

Casaletto Spartano has medieval origins and would have been born around the district of "Spartoso". According to a local legend, the abandonment of the old nucleus would have been caused by an invasion of ants. In reality, the first nucleus of the town developed at the foot of Mount Difesa due to the presence of numerous water sources and a small river that flowed in the area.

The first document to give a historiographical location to the town is a small stone plaque with a Latin inscription placed at the entrance of the mother church of San Nicola, which recalls the consecration of the church, dated 1177. Over the centuries, Casaletto Spartano was hit by the plague in 1656, but recovered thanks to the unification of the municipalities of Casaletto and Battaglia that took place in 1810.

Today, Casaletto Spartano consists of two main inhabited centers, Battaglia and the capital, as well as about thirty rural hamlets scattered throughout the territory, which covers a total area of over 70.17 km².
