Casale sul Sile

Casale sul Sile: a town characterized by clayey soils and a suggestive river

If you're looking for a place immersed in nature and history, you can't miss a visit to Casale sul Sile, a small town in the province of Treviso, in Veneto. The territory is totally flat and presents clayey soils, which favor the surface water network. There are numerous ditches and drainage channels, such as the Serva, Bigonzo, Servetto, and Riolo rivers. Moreover, the presence of the Sile, the main river that flows right near the center, offers visually stunning and naturalistic views full of charm. However, violent rainfall can cause flooding of varying degrees.

The origin of the name and the Roman era

You're probably wondering where the toponym Casale, present in many other places in Italy, comes from: the German name would derive from a watchtower on the border. Instead, the toponym of Casale sul Sile derives from the Latin term casalis, which indicates a farmhouse or a small rural settlement. In fact, since Roman times it was a country villa on the border between the lands of Treviso and Altino, the Roman city.

Casale sul Sile: nature, history and a charming river.

The medieval castle and the Italian resistance

The first nucleus of Casale sul Sile arose in the Middle Ages around the castle, which was equipped with a square tower that the lords of Treviso, the da Camino, used during the fight against the Venetians. The castle, located on the right bank of the Sile, was strategically positioned to control its traffic, and its defensive function was enhanced by the presence of an underground gallery for crossing the adjacent river, of which the ruined entrance can still be seen at the base of the tower. Over the centuries, the Carraresi expanded the castle by adding a second tower. Unfortunately, the castle suffered damages during World War II: the territory was one of the main theaters of the Italian Resistance in the plain of the province of Treviso, and here the "Aldo" group of the Garibaldi Brigade "Wladimiro Paoli", commanded by Attilio Scardala, operated. The formation participated in the liberation of Silea, Roncade, and Treviso.

The coat of arms and banner

The municipality of Casale sul Sile obtained its coat of arms and banner in 1983. The coat of arms is red with a golden Renaissance tower, placed on a green relief representing the bank of the Sile river. The tower represents the ancient castle, while the banner uses the yellow-red-green colors.

Its history, the presence of the Sile river, and the possibility of walking in nature, will make your visit to Casale sul Sile an unforgettable experience. You cannot miss the charming views that this town has to offer.
