Casalanguida
Casalanguida: a small Italian community full of historical and cultural treasures
Casalanguida is a small municipality in the province of Chieti, located in the Abruzzo region of Italy. With only 833 inhabitants, Casalanguida is part of the mountain community "Comunità Montana Medio Vastese". Despite its modest size, Casalanguida has a very interesting history and is famous for its places of interest.
Origin of the name
The name of the town comes from the late Latin "languena" which means "borderland". This helps us understand how, from its origins, Casalanguida has been a very important transit zone.
History
In the twelfth century, the town was a feud of a knight and was owned by Mathias de Carpeneto, the subfeudatory of "Raynaldus de Montis Ferrantis". At that time, the town was called "Casalangenam in Terra Borrello".
Symbols
The coat of arms and banner of the municipality of Casalanguida were granted by a decree of the President of the Republic on June 21, 1994.
Monuments and Places of Interest
Casalanguida is rich in monuments and places of interest, including:
Fortified village: the first layout of this village dates back to the thirteenth century. The towers of Casalanguida date back to the fifteenth century. One of them is located in via Marconi (tower covered in cement), the tower known as dei Cauli is incorporated into the palace of the Barons Cauli di Policorno, the other, in via Umberto I (tower remodelled over time), is incorporated into the Procaccini Palace.
Church of Santa Maria Maddalena: located in Piazza Chiesa Madre. The first layout of this church dates back to before the fourteenth century. The church is mentioned in the tithes of 1324-1325. Later, it was enlarged in the sixteenth century and restored in 1832 and 1843. The façade, plastered, is a gabled façade with a tympanum (architecture). The stone-sculpted portal dates back to the sixteenth century. The interior has three naves, and above the entrance there is a polychrome wooden organ.
San Rocco Fountain: located at the intersection of Via Straripola and Via Nuova. It dates back to the nineteenth century and is in neoclassical style. The main construction has two low-arched entrances, while the central body has a quadrangular plan with chamfered corners. Above there are sculptures that presumably depict winged horses.
Fortified village of Policorvo: located in this locality on the border with Carpineto Sinello and consists of an eleventh-century farmhouse, rebuilt in the eighteenth, formerly a castle, and its palace chapel.

In terms of population, there has been a steady decline in the number of inhabitants from 1861 to 2011, going from 1,634 to only 833.
