The SS 263 of Val di Foro and Bocca di Valle: a brief introduction

The state road 263 of Val di Foro and Bocca di Valle, now provincial road 214 ex SS 263, is an important road that connects the coastal town of Francavilla al Mare to the Maiella National Park. In this article, we will talk about the history, route and current management status of the road.

History: from origins to recent management

The state road 263 was established in 1959 to connect Francavilla al Mare to the junction with state road 81. In 1962, the road was extended to the junction with state road 84 Frentana and changed its name to "state road 263 of Val di Foro and Bocca di Valle". In 2001, the management of the road passed from ANAS to the Abruzzo Region and later to the Province of Chieti. However, with the "Strade in Rientro" plan, a large part of the road was returned under ANAS's management.

Route: from the coast to the mountains

The road begins in the area of Foro di Francavilla al Mare and heads southwest, leaving the sea behind. Along the route, you will encounter the towns of Miglianico, Ripa Teatina, Villamagna, Vacri, Casacanditella and Fara Filiorum Petri before entering the Maiella National Park.

Current management status of the road

Currently, the SS 263 of Val di Foro and Bocca di Valle is divided between ANAS's management (from the junction with SS 16 to Km 31.030) and provincial management (from Km 31.031 to the junction with SS 539). However, following the "Strade in Rientro" plan, a large part of the road has returned under ANAS management. This will allow for better coordination and management of the road network and improve road maintenance.

In conclusion, the SS 263 of Val di Foro and Bocca di Valle is an important road that connects the Adriatic coast to the Maiella National Park. The recent reorganization of road management will favor its maintenance and improvement.
