Hydrography

The Province of Campobasso is rich in rivers and lakes. The three main rivers are Trigno, Biferno, and Fortore, which go through their respective valleys of Trigno, Biferno, and Fortore. Biferno is the longest river in the province and goes through the Lake of Guardialfiera, which is blocked by a dam for the production of electricity. On the other hand, Fortore marks the border between Molise and Puglia and goes through the Lake of Occhito. Trigno, finally, marks the border between Molise and Abruzzo and goes through the province of Chieti.

Lakes

The Province of Campobasso has only two lakes, both of which are of artificial origin. The Lake of Guardialfiera, nicknamed "del Liscione," is located in the valley of Biferno and is surrounded by beautiful natural landscapes. Two viaducts, called "Molise I" and "Molise II," cross the lake for 8.5 kilometers, passing over the dam.
