The history of Carrodano

Do you want to know more about the history of Carrodano? According to some sources, the toponym derives from "carrodonum", a term referring to a mobile camp of carriages during the invasion of the Gauls in the 4th century BC. However, historical knowledge of the town is documented only from the Middle Ages, when the community of Carrodano Inferiore was subject to the domains of the Diocese of La Spezia-Sarzana-Brugnato, while the village of Carrodano Superiore was instead subject to the noble family of Malaspina by diploma of Frederick Barbarossa in 1186.

Later, the fief passed to the lords Da Passano and became a domain, from 1229, of the Republic of Genoa. The territory became part of the Podesta of Mattarana and Carrodano, which was subject to the captaincy of Levanto. In 1797 with the French domination of Napoleon Bonaparte, the territory was divided into the two municipalities of Carrodano Inferiore and Carrodano Superiore.
