History

The village of Carro has Roman origins and was a religious possession of the Framura vicariate. Later, the fief passed to the Este family and then to the Malaspina, who ceded feudal ownership to the Passano family at the behest of the Diocese of La Spezia-Sarzana-Brugnato. In 1229, it became a communal age and entered into an important alliance with the Republic of Genoa. After a brief feudal period with the Fieschi family, who subjugated the territory in the years 1271-1272, Carro definitively submitted to the Genoese Republic, which erected the village to the title of Podestà from 1299 following its fortunes. In 1556 it obtained statute autonomy.

Over the centuries, the territory of Carro had various dominations, including the French one of Napoleon Bonaparte from 1797. In 1815, it was incorporated into the province of Levante of the Kingdom of Sardinia and subsequently of the Kingdom of Italy.

Symbols

The coat of arms of Carro was recognized with the ministerial decree of March 25, 1899. It represents a Samnite shield of gold on a blue background with the crenellated tower of the Castello castle on top, flanked by two golden ears of wheat.

Monuments and places of interest

Carro has numerous monuments and places of interest. The Church of San Lorenzo, located in the main town of Carro, was built in the fifteenth century and is an example of local religious architecture. The parish church of San Giorgio, on the other hand, is located in the Castello district and was built on the remains of the ancient medieval castle erected by the Fieschi family during feudal domination. Finally, the Cerreta Sanctuary in the homonymous hamlet is adjacent to the birthplace of Antonio Maria Gianelli, a native of the village.

Carro is a municipality that deserves to be visited, both for the beauty of the surrounding nature and for its history and monuments. If you have the opportunity to pass by this area, do not miss the chance to stop by Carro!
