Carrega Ligure

Welcome to Carrega Ligure!

Hello everyone! Today I will tell you about a small Piedmontese municipality, Carrega Ligure, located in the province of Alessandria, in the high Val Borbera. But don't misunderstand me, I'm not about to give you boring geographical data! I will tell you about a place rich in history and natural and architectural beauties to discover.

Let's discover the geography of Carrega Ligure

Carrega Ligure is located on the Ligurian Apennines, in one of the most beautiful Piedmont valleys: the High Val Borbera. With only 90 inhabitants, the municipality is one of the least densely populated in Italy (only 1.5 inhabitants / km²), but don't be discouraged by this: Carrega Ligure will surprise you with its wild beauty and its hidden treasures.

If you want to reach Carrega Ligure, you already know that it is 85 km away from the capital Alessandria and 58 km from Genoa, with which it shares the Ligurian language and very strong cultural ties. Don't miss out on the beauty of the uninhabited hamlets of the Valley of Campassi.

The history of Carrega Ligure

The Church of San Giuliano, built around the 13th century and decorated with valuable stucco, is one of the architectural treasures of the municipality. But the history of Carrega Ligure is also linked to trade along the salt road and the Imperial Feuds. Until the 19th century, the municipality was part of the Republic of Genoa and, later, of the Napoleonic Empire and the Kingdom of Sardinia.

During the Second World War, Carrega Ligure became of considerable importance in the Italian Resistance. The building that housed the Command of the VI Ligurian partisan zone, marked by a plaque, is a witness to this historical period. But the war also brought suffering and violence to the population, particularly from the Nazi-fascist troops.

After the war, Carrega Ligure underwent a process of depopulation and its population drastically decreased. However, this has not prevented the municipality from preserving many of its historical and cultural treasures.

Let's visit the Castle of Malaspina Fieschi Doria

The Castle of Malaspina Fieschi Doria, of which only a few ruins remain, is an example of typical Ligurian castle architecture built around a tower. The round tower surrounded by a circular wall with a walkway is still present. Leaned against the tower is a rectangular body, which still retains the ceiling.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Carrega Ligure is a small Piedmontese municipality worth visiting. Its past, linked to ancient trade routes, wars and resistance, and its natural and architectural beauty make it a unique and suggestive place. Don't wait any longer, go discover it!
