Carpiano

Carpiano: a small town with a great history

Carpiano is a small town located in the lowlands of Milan, just 19 kilometers from the city of Milan, with a population of 4,168 people. The town is situated within the South Milan Agricultural Park and the "Borromeo" Hunting Area and covers an area of about 3.3 km².

But Carpiano is also a town with an ancient and interesting history that dates back to the late Iron Age, passing through the rule of the Etruscans and the Gauls of Belloveso, up to the present day.

The origins of Carpiano

The name Carpiano dates back to the Roman era, when small inhabited centers were named after the main species of plants that populated the surrounding woods. Probably, the name of Carpiano was inspired by the presence of the "Carpinus" plant, which is very common in the area.

Carpiano: History and Beauty of the Lowlands of Milan

The past of Carpiano

Carpiano has been the scene of important historical events, such as the Battle of Marignano in 1515, the conflicts between the Communes and Frederick Barbarossa, and between the Della Torre and the Visconti. In the 14th-15th century, the Church of San Martino Vescovo was built under the jurisdiction of the Pieve di San Giuliano Milanese. In 1300, Carpiano was one of the fiefs of the Pusterla family of Milan, who were all executed by the Visconti following a failed conspiracy. The possessions went, in 1395, to Gian Galeazzo Visconti, Duke of Milan, Count of Pavia and Duke of Lombardy.

The Grangia Castello

With the arrival of the Carthusians, the town of Carpiano changed its face, becoming a grange owned by the Certosa di Pavia. The Grangia Castello, as it was called, was the center of the town's rural activity, serving as a typical courtyard farm in the rural architecture of the area.

The Church of San Giovanni Battista

In 1442, Cardinal Gerardo Landriani erected the Basilica of San Giovanni Battista in Melegnano as a provost, thus snatching the Church of San Martino Vescovo from the jurisdiction of the Pieve di San Giuliano Milanese.

The current situation of Carpiano

Today, Carpiano is a quiet and hospitable town, immersed in nature and far from the hustle and bustle of the city. It is an ideal place to relax and enjoy the beauty of the landscape made up of cultivated fields, woods, and navigable canals.

Conclusions

Carpiano is a small town that is steeped in history and tradition. Every corner of the territory tells stories of men, wars, conquests, and great changes. The town has managed to preserve its identity and beauty, becoming a welcoming and pleasant place to spend time relaxing.
