Welcome to Caronia: History and Territory

Hello everyone! Today I will talk to you about Caronia, a beautiful Sicilian town located in the province of Messina. With its 3036 inhabitants, Caronia is a small but fascinating municipality that is part of the Nebrodi Park and the Union of Nebrodi Municipalities. The town is located on the Nebrodi Mountains, which are part of the Sicilian Apennines. The mountain on which the town is situated and which gives its name to the mountain range is Monte Caronia. The municipal territory covers an area of 226 km², making it the largest municipality in the metropolitan city of Messina and one of the top 100 Italian municipalities by area. The municipality of Caronia is located midway between Messina and Palermo and borders the Tyrrhenian Sea to the north and the municipalities of Capizzi, San Fratello, Acquedolci, Mistretta, and Santo Stefano di Camastra on either side. The coastal areas are home to the hamlets of Marina di Caronia, Canneto, and Torre del Lauro.

The History of Caronia over Time

The town of Caronia stands on the site of the ancient Calacte or Caleacte, which means "beautiful coast" in ancient Greek. According to historical reconstructions, Calacte was founded in 446 BC by the Siculo leader Ducezio, after being defeated by Syracuse and sent into exile in Corinth. The center further developed in Hellenistic times and became an important agricultural and commercial center during the Roman Empire. During this period, Caronia mainly exported wine, tuna, and other products, which were transported in amphorae. Over the centuries, Caronia went through periods of difficulties, due to earthquakes and fires that led to the destruction of entire settlements.

The current settlement of the town of Caronia was founded by the Normans, who built the castle around which the settlement developed. In the Middle Ages, it was a fiefdom of the Ventimiglia, a powerful family that used it as a commercial port. During the Spanish domination, in 1630, Caronia became a fiefdom as a marquisate of the Pignatelli Aragona Cortez family, attested by the municipal coat of arms featuring three pots on a mustard field.
