Just a short distance from the town center, heading towards the Fratelli Calvi refuge, is the village of Pagliari. It is a small urban cluster in which houses are built with slate, and it is known as the "stone neighborhood". It is suitable for those who want to experience something unique, discovering its origins dating back to the sixteenth century, a path once traveled by smugglers who wanted to avoid the customs of Passo di San Marco.
History
The origins of Carona date back to the Etruscan era, as demonstrated by recent discoveries in the Foppa area and along the path leading to the Laghi Gemelli. However, it is presumed that during that period there were no stable settlements. Subsequently, the Roman civilization settled here, interested in the great mining potential of the area, also building a furnace for iron smelting. The toponymy should date back to this period, although its origin is not known with certainty.
Later, during the era of barbarian invasions, the population took refuge in remote locations, protected from the raids of conquering hordes. The first official document attesting to the existence of Carona dates back to 926, although there is little information until the Middle Ages. The territory was subjugated to the Holy Roman Empire, and then to the diocese of Bergamo.
Subsequently, the village was included in the fiefdom headed by the Della Torre family, and then by the Ghibellines of the Visconti. The latter gave their supporters permission to kill their Guelf opponents, which led to clashes even in the most remote fractions and caused the death of many people.
