Seano

Greetings and Introduction

Hello everyone! Today we will talk about Seano, a beautiful geographic hamlet located in the Italian Municipality of Carmignano, in the province of Prato.

History

Seano is a place rich in history, whose name has been documented since 998. In a diploma of Otto III that lists the privileges of the Bishop of the Diocese of Pistoia, the "plebs... in Sejano" is mentioned along with the confirmation of possession of a "curtem a Sejano". This indicates the presence of a settlement in the medieval period, centered around a church and a Episcopal agricultural property.

The Church of San Pietro, located on a low prominence of Montalbano, is considered the center of the settlement and was supposed to be centrally located with respect to the early medieval transport network of the area. Although without a castle, the place was of great importance as a transit point along a foothill transportation route that started from Signa, passed through Poggio a Caiano, Seano and Quarrata, and arrived at Pistoia following the slopes of Montalbano. In the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, in particular, the place assumed a military function of connection with the castles of Artimino, Carmignano, Bacchereto and Tizzana, keystones of the Pistoia dominion in the area.

Seano was in fact the scene of conflicts between Pistoia and Florence, and between Guelphs and Ghibellines, culminating with the campaigns of Castruccio Castracani around the fortified castles of Tizzana, Bacchereto, Carmignano, Artimino, and Signa.
