Carlentini: between hills, red oranges, and characteristic churches.

Physical geography

Territory

Carlentini is situated on a hill on the plateau near Lentini, at the foot of Mount Pancali and the Iblei Mountains. The city is about 52 kilometers away from Syracuse and overlooks the Plain of Catania and Lake Lentini.

Origins of the name

The name of the city derives from its proximity to Lentini. In 1551, Viceroy Giovanni De Vega founded a new city in honor of the Emperor Charles V, whose name was "Lentini di Carlo". From this came the name Carlentini. The city's motto, reported in the banner authorized by the President of the Republic, is "Cesarea et Inexpugnabilis".

History

During the landing in Sicily in 1943, the citizens took shelter in the Holy Mother Church and in several local caves to escape the war. Some, on the other hand, tried to resist the Allies by opening fire at Borgo Rizza.

On December 13, 1990, the town was the epicenter of an earthquake that caused the death of seventeen people and thousands of displaced persons between Carlentini and Augusta.

The coat of arms and the banner of Carlentini were granted by the decree of the President of the Republic on June 17, 2009. The banner is yellow with a blue border.
