Welcome to the province of Avellino!

Hello friends, today I will talk to you about the province of Avellino, located in the Campania region. This province, which has about 400,000 inhabitants, is located in the heart of Irpinia, a historic-geographical district that occupies much of the provincial territory.

Discovering the territory

The territory of the province of Avellino is predominantly mountainous and hilly, characterized by a great variety of landscapes. In the northern and eastern sector we find plateaus and undulating reliefs with numerous hilltop villages, while in the south and west we have rougher landscapes with mountains of considerable elevation and towns in the valley.

Among the most important mountains we find Cervialto, Terminio, Rajamagra, Acerone di Avella, Ciesco Bianco, Monte Calvello, Partenio, Pizzo San Michele, Vallatrone and Porca delle Pere. Moreover, at about 1,263 meters above sea level, the Sanctuary of Montevergine is located, a place of great religious interest.

Rivers and lakes

The province of Avellino is crossed by several rivers, such as the Calore Irpino river (one of the largest in the region), its tributaries Sabato and Ufita, the Ofanto (which flows into the Adriatic Sea), the Cervaro (tributary of the Salso lake and the Adriatic itself), the Miscano (a tributary of the Ufita river) and the Sele (which crosses the provincial territory for only 12 km).

Unfortunately, there are very few natural lakes. The most important one is Lake Laceno, of karst origin, which has reduced in size due to the cracks that opened in its lakebed following the 1980 Irpinia earthquake. Another natural pond is Luza Aquafets, located in the upper valley of Cervaro.

Borders and language boundary

The province of Avellino has no access to the sea and borders to the northwest with the province of Benevento, to the northeast with the province of Foggia (Puglia), to the east with the province of Potenza (Basilicata), to the south with the province of Salerno and to the west with the metropolitan city of Naples.

In addition, the province of Avellino hosts the only Arbëreshë language municipality in the Campania region: Greci. In this area, Albanian is still spoken as a historical legacy of Albanian settlers who settled in the area around the 15th century.
