Hello everyone! Today we'll talk about Turin, an Italian city that should be on everyone's bucket list. Turin is the fourth most populous comune in Italy, with a population of 842,472 inhabitants as of October 31st, 2022. Located in the Piedmont region, it is the capital of the metropolitan city of Turin.

Economy and Culture

Turin is famous for being the heart of the Turin metropolitan area, which has around 1.7 million inhabitants. It is also known for being the third economic and productive complex in the country and one of the major university, artistic, and cultural hubs in Italy. Additionally, it is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: several palaces and areas that are part of the circuit of the Savoy Residences in Piedmont, and the Po River hills, a biosphere reserve.

History

Turin has a two-thousand-year-old history. It was founded by the Taurini around the 3rd century BC and transformed into a Roman colony by Augustus in the 1st century BC. After the Ostrogothic domination, it became the capital of an important Duchy of Turin, and then passed under nominal lordship of the House of Savoy in the 11th century. In 1563, it became the capital of the Duchy of Savoy and from 1720 it was the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia, being the first capital of the Kingdom of Italy from 1861 to 1865.
