Pezzan
Welcome to Pezzan, a hamlet of Carbonera!
Hello everyone, today I will talk to you about a small hamlet in the municipality of Carbonera, in the province of Treviso: Pezzan. Pezzan is located just two kilometers north of the municipal capital, near the border with Lancenigo di Villorba. The main feature of this place is the Melma river that runs from north to south and the Carbonera canal, an artificial watercourse for the water supply of the area derived from the Vittoria canal, which is in turn fed by the Piave river.
Origins of the name
Pezzan, formerly known as "Pezzan di Melma" (''Petianum Melmae''), owes its name to the river that runs through it. It was necessary to distinguish it from the homonymous "Pezzan di Campagna", the present-day Pezzan (Istrana) of Istrana.
Monuments and places of interest
If you are curious to discover the history of Pezzan, you cannot miss a visit to the Parish Church, located along via Grande di Pezzan. It is consecrated to the saints Philip and James.
The Parish Church is mentioned for the first time in 1231 in Pope Gregory IX's papal bull ''Religiosam Vitam'' as a chapel dependent on the Abbey of Sant'Eustachio in Nervesa. Initially, it was dedicated to only Saint James, but from 1344, it also had Saint Philip as its patron saint.
Several renovations were carried out, and in 1875 it was severely damaged by the collapse of the bell tower. The reconstruction of the entire complex was then decided, which took place in 1892 on the project of engineer Pietro Saccardo. The work continued in the following decades, and between 1922 and 1925, the south-east side and the facade were enlarged. From then on, the facade faced the street. The choir, rebuilt on the opposite side, was completed with the decorations of Antonio Beni.
New works were carried out between 1957 and 1960, with the construction of the new facade, the creation of the baptistery, and the inauguration of the organ. The Parish Church has a single nave and an apse orientated to the northwest, with a gabled facade with four Corinthian pilasters. In the center, there is a wooden portal, surmounted by a triangular pediment and a rose window.
