Physical geography

Located at 690 m above sea level, Carbone is in the heart of the Pollino National Park, on the left bank of the Serrapotamo stream. The area is characterized by the presence of several watercourses including the Serrapotamo and its tributaries such as the Vallone stream and the Maltempo river.

History

The town of Carbone dates back to the Middle Ages and was built around the ancient basilian monastery of Sant'Elia founded by St. Luca abbot around the year one thousand. The monastery, which housed Byzantine monks from the East, was active until 1809. In 1860, following the national plebiscite, tragic events occurred that led to the rebellion and execution of some young people.

Symbols

The coat of arms and the banner of the municipality of Carbone were granted by decree of the President of the Republic in 2005. The banner is a white drape.

Religious architectures

Carbone has several religious architectures of great interest. The parish church of San Luca, dating back to the sixteenth century, houses wooden sculptures and an oil painting depicting the Nativity. The church of San Francesco, on the other hand, also houses wooden sculptures. The church of Madonna degli Angeli, the chapel of Fraticelli and the chapel of Madonna del soccorso complete the artistic and religious offer of the town.

Natural areas

One of the most interesting places in the municipality of Carbone is the Vaccarizzo Woods, a site of community importance that extends for about 300 hectares within the Pollino National Park. Here you can come into contact with lush nature and rich tree species such as beech, white fir, Neapolitan alder, field maple, oak, holly and various herbaceous and shrubby species including striped geranium (''Geranium versicolor''), ''Cyclamen hederifolium'', ''Galium odoratum'', ''Lunula selvatica''. In the heart of the woods stands a large fountain and you can spend some time immersed in created, away from the chaos of the city.

If you love nature, trekking and photography, we recommend you to visit the Bat Cave, a natural cavity about 150 meters long and up to 20 meters high where you can observe a rich fauna of bats.
