Exploring the territory of Caramanico Terme
The territory of Caramanico Terme is situated in a typically Apennine environment, with Mediterranean scrubland that extends up to 700 m, mixed forest at 800 m, beech forest at 1500 m, and the lunar environment of the Maiella's summit plateaus. The communal territory is entirely within the Maiella National Park and includes the "Valle dell'Orfento" nature reserve. The historical center of the town is located at the confluence of the Orta and Orfento rivers, whose watercourse originates from the "Sfischia" waterfall, one of the main natural attractions in the town. The Orfento Valley is one of the first protected areas in Abruzzo and offers numerous hiking trails for all levels.
The climate of Caramanico Terme
The climate of Caramanico Terme is typical of the low mountains, with cold winters due to its proximity to the sea. Snowfalls are abundant, and the snow cover can exceed one meter, especially during the "stau" period. Summers are hot but not excessively so, although temperatures can reach 35 degrees during intense heat waves. Spring and autumn are characterized by variability, with possible heat waves at the beginning of autumn and cold outbreaks at the beginning of spring. Late snowfalls can occur until April.
The history of Caramanico Terme
Human settlements in the territory of Caramanico Terme date back to the Paleolithic period, as evidenced by numerous discoveries in the Giumentina Valley. The settlements then moved to the valley floor, in the Luchi plain, where we find traces of an Italic settlement continued until the late ancient and medieval period. The current nucleus of Caramanico Terme developed during the barbarian invasions, as evidenced by the probable Lombard origin of the name. In the 13th century, there is mention of the church of San Tommaso, and in the following centuries, the town developed around its thermal heritage.
