History

In Roman times, on the hill where the abbey of Sant'Angelo stands, there was the temple of Diana Tifatina, of which some artifacts are now preserved at the Campano Museum in Capua. In the 10th century, on the remains of the temple, a first church was built. Later, in the 11th century, the Benedictine abbey of Sant'Angelo in Formis was built, whose style shows Byzantine influences. During the Second World War, the district was severely damaged due to the bombings, but it was completely restored afterwards.

Monuments and places of interest

The district of Sant'Angelo in Formis is famous for the abbey of Sant'Angelo, an example of Byzantine architecture. In front of the abbey, there is a terrace square that offers a panoramic view of Capua. The presence of a Roman triumphal arch dedicated to the emperor Septimius Severus from the city of ''Capua Antiqua'', based on an inscription and the oldest designation of the sanctuary, has been hypothesized, but no remains have been found. Near the district, it is possible to visit the San Vito and Sansò Forest, the Garibaldin cemetery that houses the fallen of the siege of Capua in 1860, and the Annibale Bridge, an ancient Roman bridge that crosses the Volturno River.

Sports

The passion for football in Sant'Angelo in Formis is present thanks to the establishment of Real Sant'Angelo in Formis, a sports club in the district that has chosen the garnet-blue social colors. More and more young people are choosing this sport as a pastime and we see them frequenting the streets of the village, waiting to take the field.
