Capriva del Friuli: between history, nature and wine.

Origin of the name

The name Capriva has a double origin: on the one hand, it is believed to derive from the Latin term capra, which indicated the presence of wild goats in the area. On the other hand, it is hypothesized to come from the Slovenian kopriva, which means nettle. This second theory is supported by a local scholar, Maurizio Puntin, who explains that the Friulian pronunciation may have been influenced by a dialectal phenomenon known as "akanje", which requires the pronunciation of the unstressed vowel "o" as "a".

History

Capriva del Friuli has an ancient history: it was inhabited as early as Roman times and was subsequently dominated by the Lombards. In 1000 AD, it came under the Patriarchate of Aquileia, followed by the rule of the Republic of Venice after 1428. In the sixteenth century, Capriva became part of the Habsburg territories, until the end of World War I, when it became part of Italy.
