Capriano del Colle

Capriano del Colle: a little gem in Lombardy

Hello friends! Today I want to tell you about Capriano del Colle, a charming commune of about 4,600 inhabitants located in the province of Brescia, Lombardy.

Discovering the physical geography of Capriano del Colle

Capriano del Colle is a commune located at the foot of Monte Netto, also known as Colle di Capriano. It is an isolated reddish clay terrace that rises about 15-35 meters from the surrounding plain.

The surrounding territory is bathed by the Mella river, which marks the border with the neighboring communes of Castel Mella, Azzano Mella, and Dello. Additionally, the village of Fenili Belasi is crossed by the Garzetta, an eastern branch of the Garza creek.

The origins of the name Capriano del Colle

According to some sources, the name of the commune may come from the Latin personal name "Caprius" or "Caprilius." However, it is also hypothesized that the term originated from the Latin word "cavra," given that the height of Monte Netto was long used as a pasture for Capra hircus.

The history of Capriano del Colle

The village has medieval origins and developed around a castle located on the western slopes of Monte Netto and a chapel dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel. Founded as a diaconate dependent on the parish of Azzano Mella, the chapel was already a parish in not-too-distant times.

Capriano del Colle was included in the Estimo Visconteo of 1385 in the square called Capriano with Mairano. In 1427, it became part of the Republic of Venice, like the entire Brescian territory, and was assigned to the Bagnolo square.

During the Venetian era, the village underwent numerous power shifts and was briefly occupied by the Sforza in 1483. Following the arrival of French troops in 1797, Capriano del Colle became part of the Cisalpine Republic, then the Kingdom of Italy, and finally the United Kingdom of Italy.

Curiosities about Capriano del Colle

Capriano del Colle boasts a fascinating history and a very interesting cultural and natural heritage. Among the things to see, I recommend visiting the church of St. Michael the Archangel and the village of Fenili Belasi, crossed by the Garzetta, an area of great natural interest protected by the Monte Netto Park.

Additionally, the commune is famous for the production of Capriano del Colle wine, which has obtained the Controlled Designation of Origin. A curiosity: the main grape variety used to produce this wine is Groppello, typical of the area.

Conclusion

Well friends, here we are at the end of this journey to discover Capriano del Colle. I hope to have shown you better this little gem of Lombardy and invite everyone who has not yet done so to go and visit it near the Mella river: you won't regret it!
